Welcoming GERA! Designs

by Kyoko Maruoka

Creative Poppy is proud to be publishing the works of Kyoko Maruoka, a talented Japanese needlework designer.

Kyoko Maruoka's work comes under the name of GERA!

More and more stitchers worldwide have been discovering Kyoko Maruoka's work but her charts are hard to find. Now, finally, they are available as downloadable patterns, on Creative Poppy's website.

All GERA! designs published by Creative Poppy come with easy-to-read Color charts and English-language instructions.

The cutest cross stitch Kokeshi dolls

Kokeshi dolls have long been collected by visitors coming to Japan. The traditional dolls are fashioned from wood and then hand-painted.

Now you can create your very own in cross stitch!

GERA! designer Kyoko Maruoka has developed her very own method of mounting the heads and body so they turn into perfect skittle-like dolls. It took quite a lot of creativity, but here we are. They are quite small (2 3/4 inch) so you can easily fix them onto little straps to hang onto zipper pulls, scissors, phones, etc...

International Kids

Kawai is a Japanese word applying to everything cute and sweet. It certainly applies to this adorable series of children holding hands. Check out the little Chinese Girl in the first row. They come from all over the World and you can combine the two series adding more countries depending on your projects. Each child is depicted with amazing detail (click on images for full descriptions).

Fairy tales and Stories

Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots... Kyoko Maruoka loves illustrating stories, capturing the spirit of each tale and transposing it into cute and colorful cross stitch.

The funny Quartet is a fun pot-pourri of several fairies tales with the characters all mixed up!

Russian Passion

Kyoko Maruoka is deeply influenced by Russian artistic and literary works. Based on Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, here is a delicate cross stitch piece, full of tenderness and sensibility. A great work reflecting Kyoko Maruoka's exceptional talent.

Cornflowers: a new design by Faby Reilly

Following the successful Lavender and Poppy patterns, here is another humble wildflower, the cornflower, adorning Faby Reilly new series. The first item in the collection is a biscornu

With immense talent, the designer is able to capture in stitches all the delicacy of the flower, its soft blend of blues and purple, its finely indented petals, its tiny pistils. What a delight, as you stitch along, to see all these delightful details come to life on your fabric in a delicate mix of cross stitch and specialty stitches with a few seed bead accents.  Cornflower biscornu - a cross stitch patterns by Faby ReillyCornflower biscornu - a cross stitch patterns by Faby Reilly (zoom)

Why not create your own buttons (that match your stitching)button in the center of the Poppy biscornu

We had received several inquiries from stitchers, asking about the button in the center of the Poppy biscornu. Here's the answer: it's hand made with Fimo paste! Faby was looking for a button suitable for her latest piece and she thought, why not, let's try making one!

With the first one a success, Faby Reilly went ahead and made some more. In particular a pretty blue button that matches her latest pattern the Cornflower biscornu.
This time, however, she thoughtfully created a tutorial to share with other stitchers. Now you can make your own, following her "how to create a cornflower shaped button" step-by-step guide. pretty blue button that matches her latest pattern the Cornflower biscornu

Now once you've started you won't be able to stop. With a little practice and creativity you can make your own buttons matching your favorite biscornu patterns. It's a great idea, isn't it? Have fun!

The tutorial is available on our free download page and - of course - you will also get it for free when you order the Cornflower biscornu chart. The tutorial will automatically be added to your cart.

Ideas for stitching: Framing a biscornu pattern fFraming instead of mounting as a biscornu Faby Reilly Poppy Biscornu pattern

Véronique R. came up with a totally unexpected idea: After stitching Faby Reilly's Poppy biscornu pattern, she found the stitched piece so lovely she decided not to mount it as a biscornu but to frame it instead.
The result is stunning. The stitched piece has a little bit of an Art deco touch that makes a perfect framed piece.

Poppy Biscornu by Faby Reilly

Tiny and cute: fitting a pattern onto a scissor fob tiny and cute, stitched one over one thread

Here's an other idea we received from Jenifer:
"I made this adorable scissor fob out of the Barbara Ana "Don't Bug Me I'm Stitching" design.  I stitched it 1 over 1 on 28 count evenweave. I also used glow in the dark DMC for the eye's!
Barbara Ana designs are so colorful and fun."

What a great idea! If you're patient enough (and have a good eyesight) you can turn any medium size pattern into a miniature by stitching one over one. This  pattern is 41 x 61 stitches (w x h) and turned out  1 1/2 x 2 inches when stitched.

Don't bug me, I'm stitching! by Barbara Ana

Falling in Love: latest Perrette Samouiloff's designs

With Valentine's day coming up, here is a great pattern you may want to stitch. It's full of tenderness and so delicate, like all other of designer Perrette Samouiloff's patterns. Our favorite part is the two children flying their heart shaped kites. The patterns come in two sizes as usual but if you want to stitch that scene, pick the larger one.
Don't forget you can stitch Perrette Samouiloff's patterns as a whole or use separate parts for cards or other projects, so it's great value too!Falling in Love, a cross stitch pattern by Perrette Samouiloff (large pattern)Falling in Love, a cross stitch pattern by Perrette Samouiloff (large pattern)

Home Decor: 17th century engravings in Cross Stitch

We are used to Helga Mandl's fun and whimsical patterns so it came as a little surprise to us to receive these fine reproductions of 17th century engravings. In fact Helga came across this pair of exceptional flower bouquets and set to reproduce them as cross stitch charts.
As for any reproduction of art in cross stitch, the quality of the charting is what makes the whole difference. Helga Mandl has made a great job of rendering these patterns in their original colors.Bouquet of tulips and rose, by Helga Mandl after an engraving by Francis DelaramBouquet of tulips and rose, by Helga Mandl after an engraving by Francis Delaram (z0om)

Kyoko's Studio, cross stitch from JapanWelcoming a new designer, Kyoko of Japan

Creative Poppy is proud to welcome a new designer, Kyoko's Studio.

Kyoko is very much inspired by nature and the seasons. Her motto is "another day, another stitch", each day bringing more poetic images she feels the urge to transpose into needlework, a stitch at a time.

This pattern is dedicated to an old friend, a very old cherry tree that grows in front of her window and when, year after year, a little miracle occurs and the venerable old branches suddenly burts into bloom.

A unique baseball cap to cross stitch!

Here is a truly creative project brought to you by designer Tam's Creations who fine tuned a mounting technique that lets you cross stitch and finish a baseball cap starting from scratch with only needlework fabric and some basic supplies. You don't even need a sewing machine as the pieces can be assembled using the backstitch guide and a slipstitch. The stitching part is fun too with a "freestyle" combination of floss colors.

"How many birds are there in Barbara Ana's 'All Creatures Great and small' Sampler"?

If you count the weathercock, there are indeed 23 birds in the sampler, including blackbirds, owls, hens and chicks, and even a stork. Veronique B. came a close second. All winners received their Creative Poppy vouchers to spend on our website.

New in the Vintage textiles Collection, by Gracewood Stitches

Japan, and more specifically Kyoto, its ancient capital, is the source of inspiration for this new addition to the Vintage textile cross stitch designs by Kathy Bungard of Gracewood Stitches.

Blue hues, with contrasting white motifs were used extensively in traditional woven fabrics in Japan. The Kyoto cross stitch pattern renders the wowen feel of this ancient art.

Finishing ideas: tray lining in cross stitch

Here's a beautiful idea for your cross stitch projects, lining the bottom of a tray with a splendid cross stitch mat. The picture shows the Alsace design from Gracewood Stitches. Any other of the designer's gorgeous patterns from the Vintage Textiles collection would be equally suitable as they can all be adapted to any size of object. Further more you can easily adapt your own colors to suit your home interior hues.

We suggest selecting a tray with vertical sides, which frames the mat neatly.

What can you use a tray for? For serving coffee for sure, but there are plenty of other decorative uses in home decor such as organizing objects on a coffee table, a beside table, a chest of draws...

When needlework meets jewelry

Looking at this jewel-like ornament, you might actually wonder if it's actually cross stitch. Well yes, it is mostly counted cross stitch and backstitch that have been complemented with seed beads and sequins and embellished with a little crystal sew-on in the center. The combination of white, silver and light reflecting textures creates this extraordinary jewel-like effect while the biscornu shape with its hollow center and curved sides captures the light in a wonderful way.

Sophisticated needlework brought to you by expert designer Faby Reilly.

Stitching ideas: snowflakes in the background

Did you know there are needlework fabrics available with a printed white polka dot on a raw linen color background? They come in both Aida and in 32 ct linen (available from Zweigart, Maison Sajou and other sources). Here's a stitched model of the Victorian lady that was stitched on Zweigart polka dot Aida. It was stitched by Sylvie B. who sent us the photo. Naturally she omitted stiching the original snowflakes in the background (check the original piece here). We find it's a great idea and wanted to share it will all. Thank you Sylvie!

Pictures of the Victorian Lady

We've just received from Shannon Christine Wasilieff some lovely pictures of the Victorian Lady, with amazing beading details. We just love the way the flowing satin is embellished with golden highlights as well as the attention to detail such as the lamposts decorated with Christmas garlands.

She is stitched on 32 count Crystal Sprite by Picture This Plus Fabrics, which is an opalescent soft purple.

Old fashioned Christmas

How about getting rid of all the glamour and glitter and returning to the simple joys of Christmas? When each child only received one but - oh so treasured -  toy, when Christmas trees were simply lit with candles, and when the family would gather around the chimney place in front of a warm fire.

Designer Faby Reilly captures those simple joys of Christmas in these two lovely projects with the same centre piece featuring a Victorian Christmas scene.

The first pattern is an ornament that stands or can be hung.

Christmas Joy on a green background

Susan R. kindly sent us a picture of her latest project, a beautiful version of Barbara Ana's Chrismas Joy on green linen.

In the original piece stitched by Barbara Ana on Vintage Country Mocha from Zweigart, the white motifs blend softly in the background and the red motifs stand out by contrast.

In Susan's piece, the motif is stitched on green linen which emphasizes the white motifs in the background and the design turns out overall quite different. Below are the two versions side by side for you to compare. Aren't they both lovely? Congratulations Susan for stitching such a beautiful piece!

Mini frame embellishments

Finishing ideas: mini frame embellishmentsFinishing ideas: mini frame embellishmentsFinishing ideas: mini frame embellishmentsMini frame embellishments

Are you short of ideas once you're done with your stitching? Do your finished pieces tend to finish up in a cupboard?
Finishing can be half the fun. Here is yet another idea to easily jazz up your finished pieces so they look stunning!

The idea:

Embellishments add dimension and glitz to cross stitch. When done right, they really compliment your stitching and give a finished, professional look. Here we look at  4 different cross stitch pieces and pair them with the perfect accessory. They are then fitted into a standard frame.

The trick:

You're done with your stitching but the size of your finished piece doesn't match a standard frame. How can you display it without having a custom frame made? Buy a slightly bigger ready-made frame and use the extra room to add pretty embellishments. No need to ruin yourself on the frame. As you won't be using the glass part of the frame, you can buy some very basic ones which will still look great.

Now, look into your stash: beads, buttons, ribbons, trimmings, felt, fabric and look for the best match for your pattern. Mix and match, experiment, this is huge fun!

Here are four examples based on the Cute Christmas Teddy cards by Lesley Teare designs.

These pieces were cross stitched on 28ct white linen needlework fabric. Finished size: 3 1/2 x 4 inch. They were framed in standard 3 1/2 x 5 inch wooden frames with embellishments filling the extra space.

Case 1: Christmas teddy paired with twisted paper cord and mini bells

Frame for Cute Teddy Christmas mini-motifs - case 1

Accessories and embellishments used for framing the Cute Christmas Teddy cards - case 1

Christmas bells add extra Christmas excitement to this cross stitch piece.

A red and ecru paper cord runs across the base of the stitched piece, as if underlining the text: "Love to you". The tiny bells are sewn on just underneath the cord.

We like the contrast between the natural looking matte paper cord and the shiny metal bells. Both accessories are carefully color-matched with the stitching, and the gold of the bell recalls the golden thread used in parts of the design such as teddy's belt.

Case 2: Angel teddy paired with wand and girly trimmings

Accessories and embellishments used for framing the Cute Christmas Teddy cards - case 3Frame for Cute Teddy Christmas mini-motifs - case 3

This little angel teddy was equipped with a "real" wand, a purple star shaped bead that was thread onto a section of golden wire. The actual wand, that was initially part of the original cross stitch design, was omitted when stitching.

A bright fuchsia colored trimming forms the base of the work, creating a focal point on the part stitched with the words "Happy Christmas".

A lighter floral trimming, white on white so as not to overwhelm the stitching, fills the top part. Its floral motifs adds an extra girly touch to the piece .

Case 3: Teddy-girl paired with red velvet

Frame for Cute Teddy Christmas mini-motifs - case 2Frame for Cute Teddy Christmas mini-motifs - case 2

A sumptuous red velvet ribbon with dotted green border is combined with velvet cut-out snowflakes. Together they form a large band, a base for the cross stitch motif. Both are glued onto the fabric with textile glue.

Case 4: Teddy boy paired with gingham buttons

Accessories and embellishments used for framing the Cute Christmas Teddy cards - case 4

Frame for Cute Teddy Christmas mini-motifs - case 4

This little teddy getting out of bed to check out his Christmas stockings is so sweet, he deserved a special treatment.

Out of "the stash" came these pretty buttons, colorful and playful, that will appeal to children. A perfect match for this cross stitch pattern.

So they look neat, the buttons were sewn onto the fabric with a single strand of white Pearl cotton N°5.

Scarlet Letters (detail), cross stitch pattern in the Color series by Tempting TanglesThe amazing evocative power of words

Simply looking at one's stash of red floss, or searching through a color card for the perfect tone of red, us stitchers appreciate the incredibly rich world of color, one of the things that irresistibly draws us to stitching. Human beings have often been at loss to describe colors and most often simply revert to an image, "blue as a clear blue sky". Many color names are thus very poetic.

In the following designs, Tempting Tangles collects words that are wonderfully evocative of each of her favorite shades. They read like a poem and are beautifully laid out in cross stitches, embellished with delicate Quaker style motifs.

Some things in life deserve special attention. Whether you are a coffee or tea lover, the right pot, the right cup and the perfect blend or brew makes the whole difference.

Needlework fun: it's all in the detail

If there is one specificity that sums up the art of Tempting Tangles designs, it's certainly the attention given to detailed stitching. While most patterns are mostly cross stitch, the designer is constantly focusing on how to best render her subject in stitches. Here are 5 close up examples of patterns where little stitching details are inserted that take the stitching to a new level.

If you are not familiar with the stitches described below, not to worry: the designer takes you by the hand, introducing you to all these lovely stitches as you work through your piece.

Good Morning (detail), cross stitch pattern designs by Tempting TanglesTexture

Designer Deborah A. Dick loves to vary the threads used, according to her subject. Take this little beaded-eyes dragon fly, hovering among the cross-stitch flowers. In contrast with the silk floss, its body and wings are stitched in a glowing emerald green with metallic tones, in a combination of backstitch and cross stitch, and embellished with two copper and ginger petite seed beads.

Curves

Any cross stitcher will know that one of the difficulties of cross stitch is to render beautiful curves. This is true for plants, but also for any round shapes, such as this delicate coffee pot, with a  top that curves and finishes into a round tip. The designer used a couple of split stitches to delicately finish the cross stitch into a fine curve. The split stitch is a variation of the stem stitch, that creates a neat continuous line.

Summer Buzz (detail), cross stitch pattern designed by Tempting TanglesDimensional effects

This pretty spring pot is adorned with branches of delicate cherry blossoms. Notice how they stand out in front of the cross stitch background. To achieve this effect, the designer worked the fragile petals in a lazy daisy stitch, a quick and easy stitch with maximum effect. The branches are worked in stem stitch, a stitch that is both fine and dimensional, perfect for stems, hence its name. To reinforce the contrast with the words stitched in the background, notice how the designer outlines the cross stitching, making them solid and sturdy in comparison with the blossoming flowers. As a final touch, a couple of golden seed beads are worked into the hearts of the flowers.

>> Summer Buzz designed by Tempting Tangles

Giovannis Alphabet (deatil), cross stitch pattern designed by Tempting TanglesDensity

Check out this little flower that punctuates Giovanni's Alphabet. In contrast with the neighbouring cross stitch, it has a smooth lustrous finish. This is achieved with the use of satin stitch - another aptly named stitch - that fills the petals. It is also neatly outlined with stem stitch. The designer naturally guides you, how to start, how to give a direction to your stitches. Her designs are always "chock-full" of tips.

Satin Stitch is one of the designers beloved stitch, you'll find it in many of her works, in particular in borders and  frames. It is beautiful when worked in an overdyed thread, highlighting the subtle variations of color of the floss.

Creation (detail), cross stitch pattern designed by Tempting TanglesDepth

Creation is one of Tempting Tangles most ambitious undertakings. An extraordinary achievement, it depicts the amazing Biblical story of the formation of the world, the creation of heavens, light emerging, seas forming. Among the swirling clouds, in a myriad cross stitches of smoky blues and grey, light emerges. The focus point of this lighter area of pale yellow and white is a very special stitch, a large Rhodes diamond that has been specially adapted and elongated. Look closely... this is god's eye!

>> Creation designed by Tempting Tangles

These are only just a few examples of the remarkable attention the designer gives to detail. There are many, many more for you to discover.  Each of Tempting Tangles designs is always an interesting voyage into the wonderful possibilities of needlework.

Designs by Tempting Tangles illustrating episodes from the BiblePowerful story telling

The Bible is full of wonderful episodes, including the compelling story of the Creation of the World. In the following designs Tempting Tangles picks carefully selected quotes from Genesis, Jonah and other scripture, to tell and illustrate an episode in stitches.
