A tribute to Portugal and its rich cultural heritage

Barbara Ana's latest dreaming girl is a celebration of everything Portuguese, from the sea, like blood running through its veins, to its rich expressive music, a complex mix of sorrows and joys. It's amazing how much detail is fitted in a single pattern, from the quartet of cats below a lampost, to the tiny harbour and numerous references to traditional Portuguese crafts, vibrant colors contrasting with the black background.

Two antique samplers in contrasting colors and shapes

These two reproduction samplers brought to you by Couleur tourterelle could not be more different.

One is a classic needlework practice worked by a young girl, learning to stitch letters of the alphabet, line after line, on canvas, and proudly lined and framed for display.

The other is a personal collection of motifs, saved by a dedicated stitcher for future personal use. And while the placement of motifs is random, priority being given to fitting as many motifs as possible, it turned out to be really colorful and decorative.

Both reproductions are carefully recharted to best reflect colours and stitches of the original works.

The games of yesteryears

Go outside and play! Cross stitch designer Perrette Samouiloff recalls the games of yesteryear, one devoted to croquet, with children criss crossing their wooden mallets as they stuggle to get the ball through the hoop. The other features the many old-fashioned games that kept children busy walking on stilts, skipping with a rope, rocking on a see-saw, riding a bicycle, balancing on a board, playing with skittles, testing their skills with a diabolo, a yoyo, a bilboquet or juggling balls, as well as playing a game of badmington.

A rare early 19th century french Sampler

Unlike English and North European samplers, and their American counterparts, its is quite rare in France to come across sampler dating back to the early 19th century or before. Meriem Chauvet, the collector and designer behind Couleur Tourterelle, was delighted by this find that dates back to the early years of the Napoleon reign.

Catholic faith remained dominant in France, and sampler of the times featured a religious theme, following strict rules where every item was coded. This is a beautiful and attractive sampler, with a long interesting text above and, in lower part, flowers and trees of paradise that would naturally appeal to our young stitcher.

A pair of simple garden and countryside samplers

Easy and relaxing to cross stitch, here is a pair of delightful samplers that form a pair, in a mirror effect. They can be stitched on either a black or a white background. Ideal for a beginner to stitch as a second step, after giving cross stitch a try - or for an expert stitcher to take a break between more challenging patterns.

Barbara Ana's psychedelic World

Is this a tree? A flower? A single globular eye? No, it's a neuron, at least seen through Barbara Ana's very creative mind. It comes in the most cheerful sunny colours, emphasized by the dark background. A firework of colors in a jungle of exotic flowers and mysterious shapes.
