Can you spot Betsy Ross, needle in hand, putting the finishing touches to the flag she has just sewn? This cross stitch pattern designed by Barbara Ana, dated 1776 (though "stitched" in 1777), is a tribute to everything American, and to all the women behind the great men.

A tribute to Frida Kahlo
More often than once, Barbara Ana has a little surprise in store for us, such as this brand new release, a portrait and tribute to the Mexican artist and painter Frida Kahlo.
We love the baroque and esoteric feel, the stunning eyes inspired by the artist's autoportraits, and the words "Viva la Vida" perfect for a woman who boldly embraced life and love.

The Portuguese Bird sampler: A question from a stitcher
Karine's question about Barbara Ana's Portuguese Bird Sampler:
Hello, is this sampler inspired by vintage embroidery motifs, or is it an actual reproduction of an antique Portuguese sampler?
Creative Poppy:
This is an interesting question. So we asked the designer.
The embroidery is indeed an original creation, as are all Barbara Ana's samplers, with the exception of this single reproduction sampler.
So why Portuguese?
For the Portuguese Bird Sampler, the designer was inspired by a trip to Arraiolos near Lisbon, Portugal and the discovery of the Arraiolos embroidered carpets named after the city where they are made.
She was struck by a bird motif that she saw on an old carpet and that generated the idea for this sampler.
The Bird theme is a motif that very much inspires Barbara Ana:

As the months go by
Designer Kathy Bungard of Gracewood Stitches has started a new collection of designs, each dedicated to a special month of the year.
The July pattern is inspired by the silky-leaved orange poppies that bloom in our summer gardens. The stitched design shows the graceful silhouettes of the flowers against a warm tangerine background.

Damask floral motifs
Textile type cross stitch designs are one of Kathy Bungard's forte. As if they were fabrics, with threads of different colors interwowen so as to let a motif appear on the textile surface, she creates powerful designs in cross stitch with a single or limited number of colors. And while she enjoys playing around with many abstract forms, she has created some stunning and very decorative flower designs.
