Samplers forever
Living in the English countryside and a great lover of antique needlework samplers, the designer draws much of her inspiration in traditional motifs, yet giving them a modern twist and personal touch. She has designed many a gorgeous sampler for Riverdrift House, such as the exceptional Sampler featured right that was created for the bi-centenary of the death of Jane Austen and hangs today in Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. Pure Cross Stitch, pure Joy
Ever since she started Riverdrift House and designing professionally, Amanda Stevenson has consistently only used cross stitches for every one of her patterns. Keep it pure and simple seems to be her leitmotif. No backstitching, no fractional stitches, just pure cross stitches from one end of the design to another. This does not mean the designs are not intricate, quite the contrary. It does however make for easy and pleasant stitching, whether you are a beginner or an expert.
- Beginner cross stitchers will find it easy to complete the smaller patterns, stitching on 14 count Aida (see picture left)
- Experienced stitchers might want to stitch instead on 28 ct linen, over two threads of fabric. The design will be the same size but the feel will be more sophisticated and authentic. See our tips for stitching on linen.
- Expert stitchers can try some miniature stitching, over one thread, say on 25ct linen. The result will be stunning and since all patterns are full cross stitch only, it's no problem stitching over one thread. Why not give it a try?
Welcome to the world of Folkies
Folkies is the name given to Riverdrift House's latest series of patterns featuring couples wearing beautifully detailed traditional folk costumes. We love the way they stand tall and proud, looking us straight in the eyes. There are currently 6 designs in the collection. More coming soon!

Ocean breeze, maritime motifs
In Cornwall, wherever you are, you are never far from the sea. Amanda Stevenson says she likes gazing at the bit of Cornwall which is right outside her windows. Ships, ocean waves, bunting flying in the wind, seagulls, all these maritime motifs are recurrent themes in her work, either as main designs (see below) or tiny nautical motifs that have slipped into a sampler (see right). More Houses & Gardens
Houses comes in many shapes and color in Riverdrift House samplers. One of our favorites (below left) is the yellow House sampler with its bold colors and motifs full of interesting symbolism. The samplers show the English countryside in all its glory. There are benches, fountains, topiaries and many visiting animals in the grounds. And above all, flowers! Pictured right: Big House 2 |
